Dear editor,
What depressing headlines about our pristine Lake Joseph and its excessive amounts of phosphorus. Lake Joe has always had the clearest water of the three big lakes, and it is also the deepest, taking about 100 years to completely empty and refill.
This should be of great concern to everyone. How about a moratorium on any new golf courses, and strict regulations as to the type and quantity of chemicals used to produce the artificial green “perfect” grass.
However, golf course owners are not entirely to blame. It is up to all of us to use environmentally friendly products in our homes, i.e. phosphorus-free detergents for dishwashers and washing machines.
Avoid using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in our gardens, start a compost container, it is far more effective than chemicals and doesn’t cost anything.
Everything is interconnected, so what goes on to the land eventually makes its way into our streams, rivers and lakes.
